Too Close for Comfort!
Well I do not know about you, but I have got the Hunting fever bad, I am about to have a breakdown waiting to just get out there and hunt something. I would prefer a good crisp morning of Bow Hunting Whitetails, but that is still a little out of reach for now. That still doesn't keep a man from thinking about it every minute of the day. Here lately the heat has really been keeping me out of the woods. I tell you what if it gets any hotter in Alabama I think I am going to pack it all up and head north. It is just no fun being out their when you are about to pass out, heck its hard just to get out and shoot your bow because you cant keep the sweat out of your eyes.
Well this weekend I could not take it anymore I had to go after something. So I called up my Ol' buddy Mr. Clark, AKA: Cactus. He is around 73 years young and one of the best outdoors man around these parts. If I was going on a survival hunt I would want to be with him. He knows his way around about anything and gets around well for his age. He has hunted all over the world and was in Africa for about 12 years. Not to mention he is an AWESOME trapper and one of the best coyote callers I have ever met. So we spoke and decided to get after some yotes. We had been seeing some around the area and he actually lost a prize squirrel dog to a yote back in the fall so we already had a score to settle.
So we headed out about daylight on Saturday morning in a little place we call "Little South Texas" because that is what it looks like. It is 400 acres of sage and little pines out in the middle of nowhere and holds lots of deer and yotes. It was already 80 degrees with the humidity being a million percent and the sun was not even up yet so I already knew it was going to be a muggy Alabama day. We set up in the middle of a big sage field and started to called. We were only there for a bit when we had a lost male answer us and he was coming in. Being a still morning the last thing I was worried about was scent. There was no wind what so ever and, we both sprayed down with Dead Down Wind so we were a 100% sure they would not smell us, so we stayed right where we were and continued to call. The grass was pretty tall but we could see good. The farmer cuts lanes in it for us so we can hunt it. Well we continued to call and that young male came right in and when I say right in I MEAN RIGHT IN! We were camoed so well and with our scent being totally gone that devil just about ran right over us. I tell you what, that says a lot about Dead Down Wind products. Those coyote noses are hard to fool and this one about jumped in my lap. We had our backs to some high grass.......which is a NO NO right off the bat, but when he answered us, he was less than 100 yards in front of us so we just stayed. We were sitting about 15 feet apart and this dude came right in between us from behind. Let me be the first to say that is NOT a good feeling. I looked over and I could have grabbed that yote by the leg, but believe me that never crossed my mind. I had a lot running through my mind all at once and most of it I should never repeat again. But I did what I think most of y'all would have done I started waving my hands and hollering like a little girl because he was going for the call and the call was in Cactus's mouth. I could not shoot the yote and Cactus never even saw him there til I made it run off right in front of us. Was I in a panic........Well not really. Any other time I would have sat there and watched the little critter till I felt threatened, but this time I thought he was gonna get my friend so I was a tad bit uneasy so to speak......LOL.
Well after all that excitement and a quick change of britches we decided to set up like we were supposed to. We called for a while and moved to a few different spots but had no luck. It had already heated up to the upper 90's so we decided to head to the local cafe. After all it was just 9:30 A.M. and we had a lot to talk about over breakfast. I guess nothing likes to move in this heat not even the yotes. One thing is for sure we had a blast and a fun but scary memory was made that we lived to laugh about. Although we did not get to bag any coyotes I got to make another great memory with my good friend Cactus and that is a Trophy harvested in itself. Well we plan on going back this weekend so until then I hope all your trips to the Great Outdoors are filled with Fun and good memories.
Remember: Its not always about the Harvest, it's about all the events and memories the Good Lord Blesses you with that day. "Those are the Real Trophy's." God Bless You all!

Thsanks for the story Joey. Sounds like a hunt to remember for a long time. I have had many memorable hunts, and very few of them ended in anything being killed. There are so many wonders to see in nature it is always an adventure to get out.

I am glad you had someone in the woods with you. I have been with you in my woods and we managed to get twisted around. Sounds like a lot of excitement out there. Way to look out for others to ensure safety prevailed. Good luck on going back in after that critter later.
